Aspergers 101- Breaking the Barriers – a program review
ByASPERGERS 101 – BREAKING the BARRIERS A program by Danny Raede and Hayden Mears, reviewed by Connie Hammer.
There are many programs out there to help parents deal with autism and Aspergers. I have developed some programs myself that are in many ways very similar to the one’s the Asperger Experts have developed but in one very specific way they are very different. Hayden and Danny present the perspective of individuals who has ‘been there’ and ‘done that’. They experience Asperger’s in real life and they know best what works for them and therefore can offer great insight into what will most likely work for other individuals with Aspergers.
Yes you can say that everyone’s experience is different and unique, because it is. I know you’ve heard the saying – “When you’ve met one person on the autism spectrum you have met just one person on the autism spectrum”. Hayden and Danny’s individual experiences may not be exactly the same as everyone else’s but it’s the closest you can get.
In Aspergers 101 – Breaking the Barriers, Danny and Hayden present major roadblocks they have personally experienced that can prevent people with Aspergers from maximizing their potential. They do a great job explaining why the four barriers need to be addressed by parents and caretakers. Despite the uniqueness of every individual, these barriers are universal to everyone on the spectrum at one level or another. Your job is to identify these roadblocks to your child’s success so you can prevent, minimize and eliminate them, in order for your child to make progress.
As Hayden and Danny take you through these four barriers they do it with enthusiasm. You can hear it in their voices as they share many personal stories in the audio that really help you understand why these things are important to address. The words they use paint great visuals in your mind to help you understand why you can’t reach or teach a child when he or she is in a defensive mode. They also discuss the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between nurturing just enough, yet not being too enabling as a parent of a child with Aspergers.
The first barrier that keeps any ASD child stuck is lingering in defense mode. They address three major attackers that cause a person to go into defense mode and stay there. Identifying these three attackers and then creating a plan to overcome them is what will help any parent and child move forward.
Barrier #2 is one that can take parents a while to grasp because they are so used to looking at the world through their neurotypical lens. Danny and Hayden do a great job presenting the reality that the Aspergers mind is a very different critter. The sooner a parent plays detective and gets into their child’s skin in order to understand just how his/her unique mind works, the better. The insight they present is very clear and specific and the analogies they use make it easy to ‘get the picture’.
Many of us have acquired ways of communicating that become hard wired; let’s call it our default mode. When you combine this with the hard wiring of a person on the autism spectrum, the result is Barrier #3 – poor communication. If you’re unconsciously speaking a foreign language to your child and then wonder why she doesn’t respond to you in the expected fashion, Hayden and Danny will provide you with information, tips and strategies that are invaluable.
Once Danny and Hayden get you to ‘door #4’, then and only then can your child begin to learn life skills and make progress in a forward direction. This part of the program touches upon ways to reduce anxiety, how to increase social skills and common traps to avoid.
Not all of this information can be applied right away, especially with very young children, as it will take time to develop a good foundation. Putting all of this useful information into your bank account now though, will make it easier for you to withdraw it a later date as soon as your child is developmentally ready.
After approximately eighty-five minutes of listening to this information packed audio program, these Asperger Experts will begin to transform your life, and the life of your child, for the better. It is worth every minute and every penny you spend, especially with the money back guarantee they offer – a great investment in your family’s future!
Hi Connie. Thanks for the review. I so much want to purchase the aspergers 101 however I have my concerns over the cost. You have alleviated some of those worries. Thanks again.
Josefina – I’m glad the review was helpful.
My whole life has been interesting nonetheless. As an Aspie I’ve come to find myself having struggles in some form or another. My life has changed since the day I was ripped away from the parents I knew at 3 years old and sent to a foster home for 3 days. Talk about a struggle and since then I’ve lived my life seeing people I meet as guilty until I get to know them & that’s when they pass my test proving their innocence to me. In general I’ve always found a sense of enjoyment being around people I know & yet I have felt For years the world has passed me by.I even likely fucked up my relationship with the woman I wanted to spend eternity with. It also didn’t help that her mom is also a control freak and since Stephanie has Aspergers we understood each other, but that love is gone forever, I think.
Thanks for sharing Christopher and think of as many positives as you can. May better days be ahead for you!
